There are so many things to think about when it comes to remodeling a bathroom. We are here to make this process as easy as possible to that you do not become overwhelmed.
Shower and/or Bathtub
Options: walk in shower, shower/tub combo, stand alone tub
- Make sure to think long term. Is this a home you plan on staying in? If so, you might want a walk in shower to avoid having to step over the tub ledge when you’re older.
- Do you want a bench for your shower?
- Do you want a niche or would you prefer shelves? A niche is a recessed shelf or area built into a shower wall for your toiletries. This would be an option if you decided on tile walls. The niche can often be an accent piece as well – utilizing different color/type of tile than the rest of the area.
- If you decide on the shower/tub combo, you have the option of getting a tub surround (made of fiberglass) or tile for that area of the bathroom.
- Pros of tub surround: low maintenance, more affordableCons of tub surround: can feel less luxurious, limited customizationPros of tile: design variety, increases value.
- Cons of tile: slippery, grout maintenance, more costly
- You might want a stand alone tub if you are looking for a more luxurious look.
- Do you want a glass door for the shower/bathtub area? Or a shower curtain or slider?
Flooring Options
Options: tile and vinyl
- Pros of tile: design variety, increases value, great option if you’re doing heated floors.
- Cons of tile: slippery when wet, high maintenance, cracking risk.
- Pros of vinyl: most vinyl flooring, especially LVT (luxury vinyl tile), is water resistant, cost effective, low maintenance, and slip resistant.
- Cons of vinyl: can be punctured or dented, potential for water seepage.
When thinking of flooring for your bathroom, decide on whether you’d like heated flooring.
Lighting
Options: overhead lighting and vanity lighting. (You could always do both!)
- With overhead lighting you can do recessed, flush mount, , chandelier, etc.
- With vanity lighting you have to decide on the placement: above the mirror? Side of the mirror?
Toilet
There is a standard height option (14.5 – 16.5 inches from the ground); or there is ADA height (17 – 19 inches from the ground).
- ADA is highly recommended for people who have a difficult time lowering themselves down.
Other things to think about
You want to make sure you decide if you’d like a ventilation fan replacement or an upgrade. You also want to ask yourself “do we need accessibility features?” For example, curbless entry for the shower, handrails, etc. Also, don’t forget to think about the little things such as hooks or towel bar, cabinet hardware, faucet, mirror, etc.
