Thinking about transforming your basement? Before the work begins, the first step is getting a professional estimate. To ensure you get the most accurate quote, we want to help you prepare for your basement estimate! Whether you’re planning a cozy family space, a guest suite, or a full rental unit, knowing what to expect (and what your contractor needs to know) will help the process go smoothly. Here’s how to get ready for your basement estimate with confidence.

Define Your Goals
When re-doing your basement, it is important to know if you will be using it as a family space, turning part of it into a bedroom or multiple bedrooms, office space, etc. You also need to decide if you’re finishing the entire basement or just a portion of it.
Clear the Space
Clear away all clutter so that we can easily inspect walls, floors, and ceilings.
Water or Moisture Issues
Be ready to discuss any history of leaks or dampness. If your basement isn’t waterproofed, that may be part of your estimate.
Codes
There must be at least one egress window in the basement! If you are turning it into two bedrooms, then each room has to have at least one egress window. Why is this necessary? To ensure there is a way to get out in case of a fire or other emergency, as well as to adhere to code compliance.
Know Your Utilities
Have an idea of where electrical panels, plumbing lines, and HVAC systems are located. You will want/need access panels to certain things such as a the water shutoff. If you plan on upgrading any of those, make sure to let us know.
Other Things to Think About
- Do you want to pre-wire for internet, speakers, cameras, etc?
- What type of lighting might you want? Recessed, wall sconces, etc.
- Make sure you install smoke detectors and CO2 detectors.
- Understand that unexpected issues (like water damage or outdated wiring) can arise.
- Will you need soundproofing if there are bedrooms going in?
- Will you also be redoing the stairs going into the basement?
